Herborn has about 20,000 inhabitants and with its closed old town from eight centuries counts among the best-preserved medieval town layouts in Germany. Even before the First World War the town advertised for visitors as the "Nassau Rothenburg". For shops, cafés and small businesses in the old town a website that is found online and Wi-Fi that also works in older buildings therefore count.
The town also has history as a place of education: in 1584 Herborn received the Hohe Schule, a foundation of John VI of Nassau-Dillenburg. In 2016 Herborn hosted the Hessentag.
