Westerburg has about 6,000 inhabitants, is the administrative seat of the Verbandsgemeinde Westerburg and classified in the state plan as a medium-sized centre. That means: retail, service providers and administration for a larger surrounding area are based here. The castle and upper town are distinctive; the station is on the Limburg–Altenkirchen line, the RB 90 regional train runs hourly towards Siegen.
