With about 7,000 inhabitants it is the largest municipality of the Verbandsgemeinde Daaden-Herdorf and lies about 11.5 km south-south-west of Siegen. The town has a mining and ironworks history: the Friedrichshütte was a significant ironworks complex whose works building still stands today.
