Setting Up a Secure Home Office: IT Checklist

January 20265 min Reading time

The home office has become everyday life for many self-employed people and small businesses. But IT security often falls by the wayside. With this checklist you ensure a secure working environment.

1. Set up secure Wi-Fi

Your home network is the foundation. Use WPA3 encryption (at least WPA2), change your router's default password and set a strong Wi-Fi password. Ideally set up a separate network for work devices, separate from smart home devices and the family network.

2. Use a VPN

A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts all your internet traffic. That is particularly important if you access company data or process sensitive customer data. Many routers offer integrated VPN functions, alternatively there are specialised services.

3. Password management

Use a password manager such as Bitwarden, 1Password or KeePass. Every service gets a unique, strong password. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) everywhere, ideally with an authenticator app instead of SMS.

4. Keep the operating system and software up to date

Enable automatic updates for your operating system, browser and all applications in use. Outdated software is one of the most common entry points for malware.

5. Antivirus and firewall

Windows Defender now offers solid basic protection. Complement it with an enabled firewall and common sense: do not open suspicious e-mail attachments and download software only from trustworthy sources.

6. Set up data backup

Back up your working data regularly, ideally automated following the 3-2-1 rule. Cloud storage such as an encrypted Nextcloud server or a NAS with automatic backup are good options.

7. Separate work device and private device

If possible, use a separate device for work. If that is not possible, at least set up your own user account. That way you prevent private downloads or activities from endangering your work data.

Conclusion

A secure home office does not have to be complicated. With these seven basics you protect your data and work without worry. Do you need help with setup? solutioIT supports you, by remote support or on site.
